Journal Prompt Generator

This journal prompt generator hands you one question at a time from 1,570 prompts. Press the button for a random prompt, or narrow it down by theme, time of day or how deep you want to go. When one lands, copy it, print a set of five, or start a timed session with music and write your answer.

Every prompt here comes from our theme pages, daily prompts and monthly calendars, so you can always go back to the full collection behind it. Prompts for hard days stay hidden unless you choose to include them.

How to use a prompt generator

  1. Pick a theme, or leave it open for a fully random prompt.
  2. Press "New prompt" until a question makes you pause. You will not see a repeat until every matching prompt has been shown.
  3. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and write without stopping to edit.
  4. Finish with one sentence about what you noticed, then come back tomorrow for another.

Frequently asked questions

How does the journal prompt generator work?

It picks a random prompt from a curated list of 1,570 journal prompts. Filters narrow the list by theme, morning or evening, and short or deep prompts.

Can I get prompts for a specific topic?

Yes. Choose one of the theme chips, such as gratitude, self-discovery or relationships. Each theme also has its own page with the full list of prompts.

Do I type my answers into the generator?

No. The generator only shows the prompt. You write on paper. Journal Party never sees what you write.

How long should I write for each prompt?

Five to ten minutes is enough for most prompts. Short prompts work well for a quick check-in, and deep prompts are worth a longer session when you have the time.
