New Year Journal Prompts for 2027
41 new year journal prompts to set up 2027: a quick look back at 2026, intentions, a word of the year and a one-hour ritual for paper.
Updated November 5, 2026By the Journal Party team

Key takeaways
- Reflect before you resolve. Questions about the past year make your intentions more realistic.
- Use the one-hour ritual below if you want structure, or answer one prompt a day through January.
- Keep intentions small and specific. One word or one habit beats a list of ten resolutions.
How to use these new year journal prompts
Set aside an hour sometime between December 26 and January 7, or split the work into four 15-minute sittings. Work in order: look back, bridge the years, then choose. Write on paper so you can return to it next December. If a question brings up something heavy, it's fine to skip it and come back later.

New year intentions prompts (looking ahead to 2027)
An intention is a short, first-person sentence about how you want to live in the year ahead, not a target you pass or fail.
An intention guides how you show up each day, while a resolution is usually all or nothing. For more on the difference, see Are intentions better than resolutions? in the FAQ below.
Answer the prompts first, then use the example intentions for 2027 after them as a starting point for your own.

Word of the year journal prompts
A word of the year is a single theme you return to when choices get confusing. It's easier to keep than a list of resolutions.
Need a starting list? Browse our word of the year ideas, grouped by theme, plus prompts for living with your word all year.
- Which words kept showing up in my answers above?
- What do I need more of in 2027: courage, calm, focus, play, or something else?
- Choose three candidate words. For each one, how would my days change if I lived it?
- What is my word, and where will I put it so I see it daily?
- What will I do in January to honor my word?
Prompts for the first week of January
- What did I notice about myself on January 1?
- What one thing did I do this week that matched my intentions?
- What is already feeling heavy, and can I make it lighter?
- What would make next week 10% better?
- What am I looking forward to this month?
- Write a letter to yourself to open next December.
- What do I want to remember about who I was at the start of 2027?
New year reset: a 20-minute journal routine
A new year reset doesn't have to be a big overhaul. It's a short pause to clear your head, see where you are and choose one next step. Do it on January 1, on your first Monday back or on any day the year starts to feel crowded. Grab your journal, set a timer and work through the four steps below.
If you have an hour rather than 20 minutes, use the one-hour new year journaling ritual in the next section instead. It adds a full look back and a word of the year.
- Clear the page (5 min). Write down everything on your mind, tasks and worries included, without sorting it.
- Notice (5 min). Circle what can wait and what actually needs you this week.
- Choose (5 min). Write one intention for the next seven days as a sentence you could say out loud.
- Plan one step (5 min). Name the smallest action that moves that intention forward, and when you will do it.
A one-hour new year journaling ritual
- Settle (5 min). Put on quiet music, light a candle if you like, and write the date.
- Look back (25 min). Answer the five look-back prompts above, then finish with "I release...".
- Bridge (10 min). Pick two of the questions that bridge the years.
- Choose (15 min). Write three intentions, then the smallest version of each.
- Close (5 min). Pick your word of the year and write it on the inside cover.

New year journaling tips
- Reflect before you plan. Intentions built on an honest review are easier to keep.
- Use the same journal all year. Next December, flip back to these pages.
- Write intentions as behaviors. "Walk after lunch on weekdays" beats "be healthier".
- Revisit monthly. Our monthly prompt pages (December, January) give you a fresh set each month.
- Skip what doesn't fit. Not every question is for every year.
Frequently asked questions
What should I journal about for the new year?
Start by reflecting on the past year: highlights, hard parts and lessons. Then set two or three specific intentions or one word of the year. The prompts above follow that order.
What are good journal prompts for January 2027?
Try "What one thing did I do this week that matched my intentions?" and "What would make next week 10% better?". The January prompts above and our January page give a prompt for every day.
Where are the end of year reflection questions?
They have their own page now: see our end of year reflection questions for the full look back at the year.
Are intentions better than resolutions?
Intentions describe how you want to live. Resolutions are usually all or nothing. Many journalers find intentions plus one small daily habit easier to keep.
Can you give me examples of intentions for 2027?
A few examples: "I want to take one slow morning every weekend," "I want to call one friend a week just to talk" and "I want to finish my working day at a set time." Write yours as one sentence about how you want to live. There are 12 examples, grouped by rest, relationships, work and creativity, in the intentions section above.
What are some good journal prompts for the start of 2027?
Try three: "What does a good year look like if nothing dramatic happens?", "What is the smallest version of my biggest goal?" and "What does rest look like for me this year?". All three come from the intentions prompts above, where you will find more.
When should I do a new year journaling session?
Any time from late December to mid January works. If you missed it, a mid January reset works just as well.
Start the year with a guided session. Bring your own journal. We'll bring the prompts, the timer, and the music. VIP is $49.99 a year, or $9.99 a month. Cancel anytime in Settings.
